Interlock sealing

 Because of the play necessary in the interlock gab, sheet piling interlocks can only achieve a limited intrinsic seal. If the degree of tightness has to satisfy special requirements , additional interlock sealing is necessary. Se R 117 of the "Recommendations of the Committee for Waterfront Structures" on this subject.
 
Interlock filling
 The interlock filling with a weak filling, i.e. composed of a bituminous binder, is the most economical additional sealant.
 A threading interlock is factory filled with a durable, sufficiently malleable bitumen compound. in the case of multiple piles, the gaps of the prefabricated interlocks are completely sealed.
 The filling materials are environment-friendly and do not release any water pollutants.
 For percussion driving, a bituminous putty is recommended. This is a cold bitumen reinforced with fibers. it should be applied in the factory. For vibration driving, SIRO 88 is recommended. This is a hot bitumen that can also be applied on site.

Synthetic interlock sealants
 Synthetic interlock sealants comply with advanced requirements of imperviousness. For steady structures they are often chosen due to their overpaintability with coatings.
 Synthetic interlock sealants can be characterized by a prefabricated interlock filed with a suitable long-term flexible synthetic grouting and by a threading interlock provided with a special synthetic sealant, which facilitates a damage-free threading and which ensures a sufficient sealing due compression.
 Alternatively the sheet pile wall can be sealed with synthetic sealants after installation. This method requires good accessibility of the interlocks to be sealed for being economically justifiable.

Weld sealing
 A total sealing of interlocks can be achieved by weld sealing. Prefabricated interlocks can be weld-sealed in the factory. The threading interlocks have to be welded after driving. The sealing seams must be placed on the side to which the base slab of the later structure is joined.
